Attempting to minimize operating costs to fishers, they sometimes decide to use the cheapest marine fuels. Their low quality adversely affects the durability of fuel injection equipment. Similarly, reduction of sulfur and aromatic hydrocarbons, increase the boiling point at normal pressure and cetane number of modern fuels leads to a significant deterioration in their tribological properties. Polish fishing vessels can be achieved by using biofuels, which is a mixture of diesel and rapeseed oil. To carry out comparative studies for diesel and biofuel engines used to power fishing vessels were needed data, specifying lubricity and calorific value of fuels used by Polish fishermen. The conclusions are based on the examination of the chosen parameters for randomly selected fuel samples from Polish suppliers or taken directly on fishing vessels

A significant number of failures and accidents of Polish fishing vessels operating in the Baltic Sea was the impetus to examine their sources. It was found that one of the important factors causing the failure is poor condition of the fuel systems and inappropriate fishing vessels to be operated. Typical fuel installations operated on Polish fishing vessels were discussed. The methodology of sampling and testing of samples of fuel from fishing vessels to assess its fuel quality has been presented, as well as tests results

The article describes basic problems concerning qualifications required from personnel handling LNG terminal facilities and equipment in view of the new terminal in Świnoujście. Statistical data, separately reported for LNG tankers, indicate a drop of the number of accidents and machinery failures on ships. The legal basis for the organization of common seafarer training and additional training for LNG vessel crews is outlined. Finally, the authors point out the areas of training for shore-based personnel handling LNG vessels, types of equipment of training centers for specialized LNG courses and estimated costs of such training

In the years 2011–2012 Polish universities were obligated to implement education requirements in compliance with the National Qualifications Framework. First the universities defined intended learning outcomes, a basis on which curricula were drawn up. The most difficult part of the implemented system is the appropriate identification of method(s) to assess whether the expected learning outcomes have been achieved. This article discusses an examination system commissioned by maritime administration for seafarer examining, and indicates possibilities of using the developed solutions in the process of learning outcomes assessment at technical universities and academies

Fishing limits, necessity to cope with competitive fishermen of other countries, the lack of financial resources to purchase modern vessels have caused that more than 30% of the Polish fishing vessels operating at the Baltic sea were withdrawn from operation between 2003 and 2012. Vessels remaining in service, especially older types have to be upgraded by the owners towards: reduction in energy expenditure; reduce the number of crew boats by the expansion of mechanization of fishing operations; improving the safety of vessels and working on fishing boats. Uncoordinated modernizations of the fishing cutters prevent from comparing the obtained results. A research team of the Maritime University of Szczecin gathered opinions of the shipowners regarding the effects of the modernizations performed and conducted research which shall constitute the grounds to develop optimal directions for modernization and operation of the fishing vessels. This paper presents range and results of renovation and reconstruction the Polish fishing vessel DZI-102 operated at the Baltic sea.

Dziadkiem Heleny (a więc prapradziadkiem Andrzeja Balcerskiego) był Stanisław Janicki (1798−1855) matematyk, astronom, pierwszy w Polsce doktor nauk technicznych − dysertacja „O machinach parnych”, profesor Szkoły Przygotowawczej do Instytutu Politechnicznego.

New requirements of Marpol, Annex VI and Directive 2005/33/EC imposing the reduction of SOx emission in ship’s exhausts gas enter into force in 2006. The emission of SOx can be reduced by the limitation of sulphur quantity in fuel or by means of exhaust gas desulphurization methods. The authors deal with available desulphurization methods of exhaust gases as a result of high sulphur fuel burning. Besides, problems of the operation of desulphurization installations and present limitations due to the lack of detailed regulations are discussed. Furthermore, first experiences with real desulphuri-zation systems, especially in terms of economy, are presented.

An analysis of the failures occurring in the energetic systems of Polish fishing cutters, covering the years 1999–2012, is presented in this paper. The structural age, size and number of Polish fishing cutters is also indi- cated herein. The eff ect of the failures on the marine environment has been assessed, taking into consideration a presumed fuel spillage depending on fish catch volume and an analysis of the biodegradability of various fuels. The subject of the analysis also includes the damage impact of transponders cooperating with a vessel monitoring system (VMS) on an increase of the risk of collisions between other off shore industry objects and fishing vessels.

Wzrost gęstości paliw okrętowych pozostałościowych i ich lepkości, nawet do 600 cSt, wymusił stosowanie nowych instalacji do wirowania paliw i nowe problemy ze spalaniem odpadów pochodzących z takich instalacji. Artykuł zawiera wyniki mikroskopowych i spektroskopowych badań struktury i wybranych własności chemicznych odpadów pochodzących z oczyszczania paliw o dużej gęstości i lepkości.

The quality of marine fuels is standardised by the international standard ISO 8217. As practice shows, even fuels that meet all standard requirements do not completely guarantee avoiding disruptions in smooth and safe operation of the ship. The future is likely to bring more cases of improper operation of vessels, sometimes leading to main propulsion failures. One cause behind main engine breakdowns is the introduction of new products on the fuel market that are intended to meet the ever-increasing requirements of environmental protection (e.g. low sulphur content). As a result, some fuels are chemically different from the previously used residual fuels. Using them in the engine room requires special care on the part of the ship owner and the ship’s crew. The article analyses two cases in which the use of conventional residual fuels resulted in main engine stoppage. The authors, bearing in mind the causes of those failures, focus on technical consequences of using marine fuels produced by currently employed technologies.
